Default Trensfercase explosion

I just got a 96 ram 1500 with 170000k
I was on I 5 going about 65 or 70 when
without warning the t-case exploded
And broke in half. The t-case was disengaged
and I didn't notice any strange noises or binding.
does anyone know what might cause this?
I don't want to put another one in and have it blow again.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for reading

Good luck. I went through 3 of them and the 4th just got destroyed along with the transmission.

Its possible the snap ring let loose at the wrong time and as a result of that you got yourself a broke transfer case

might have been u-joint failure, and the tcase was the innocent bystander/victim.

If you're getting a new one, install a "t-case saver" so snap ring failure won't occur. This is the DIY thread about it: https://dodgeforum.com/forum/2nd-gen...241-np243.html
