drop pan, clean everything up, check for any parts in the bottom of the pan. i would suggest taking the valve body apart for a good cleaning and checking the sensors if you are comfortable doing that. its really simple just make sure how it comes apart and pay attention to where check ***** are.

Same exact thing happened to me,when your driving put it neutral when the rpms drop to say 2000 drop it into gear and it should shift up.
1.check fluid level
2.check tv cable adjustment
3.add a pint of Seafoam trans- tune or Lucas.
Mine shifts now, but late . I purchased a new shift solenoid and speed sensor $200. If your on a low budget you can CAREFULLY take the solenoid apart and clean it real good(not recommend) Speed sensor is not repairable... I'm gonna drop the pan on mine today, new filter, fluid and solenoid.
Let you know results. Kip

I would NOT recommend any additive to trans.

Ok shifts like a dream now.about two tablespoons of metal shavings in the pan screen in governor solenoid plugged...might have got away with just fluid and filter but if your gonna drop the pan, you might as well change the governor pressure solenoid and sensor....

To you and heavyb13, if you find shavings or chips in pan, you may be able to make it last a little longer, but an overhaul is needed soon. I would suggest looking to pick up a tranny from JY to rebuild and have ready to swap into truck when the time comes...and it is coming.

What should be normal to find in pan is some slight muddy looking crap around magnet. This is material from frictions in clutches and a small amount is not a concern. A huge amount means frictions are wearing and will soo be metal on metla, causing slipping and burning of frictions and steels.

Procedure to overhaul transmission can be found in the service manual located in the FAQ/DIY section. Also several goo trans rebuild threads in FAQ/DIY section as well.

The factory pan is not aluminum. And if you found a round ring (magnet) on the Gov solenoid, it belongs on the little bump impression in the pan.

+1 on that! The magnet is about the size of an old silver doll and just under 1/4" thick with a 3/4" or so hole in it. If it was on solenoid, I would think it could casue a problem....as the solenoid has a magneticl core in it. Make sure it is in bottome of pan. It is to trap contaminants to keep from pumping them through the tranny.
