White smoke only at start up???
A vacuum gauge might tell the story, as might running the engine for a few seconds from overnight cold and reading the spark plugs, as might looking for the telltale tailpipe drip, or even borescoping the cylinders...
I am probably just being paranoid however my 1995 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L just started emitting what seems to be excessive white smoke on start up now that the temps here in Michigan at night are in the 30s. It stops right away once I get out on the road. The smoke does not smell of coolant and I have been checking the coolant level all week and there has been no loss. When I start up the truck my idle is great and I am not experiencing any performance issues at all. I also recently changed the plugs which had no signs of issue either. I have also checked the color of the oil and coolant and neither indicate contaminates. Also I smelled the white smoke and it smells like normal exhaust. Do you guys think it could just be normal? I just don't remember there being this much white smoke last year.

If it only happens when it's cold out, it's likely just steam -- one of the by-products of combustion is water vapor. Smoke at start-up when it's warm out is another thing entirely, almost always worn valve guides. That smoke will have a pale blue tint to it.
I had the same issue and I changed the PCV valve and it seem to solve the problem it has been 3 weeks now and have not had to add oil or any smoke on start up. Before I was adding about 1 qt every 1,000 miles and it would smoke every now and then.

I’d put my money on plenum gasket. I’m about to do it. Just looking for another intake to do the kegger mod. Check out Hughes aluminum belly pan if you decide to do it. Does yours smell like oil?
