There you're onto something. Someone neglected to maintain the coolant properly, and that missing metal didn't evaporate into the atmosphere so it's probably spread throughout the cooling system. No doubt some of it's in the radiator, restricting coolant flow. It might just be that no amount of flushing will clear it, but it's worth a shot.

I said something the other day that's applicable here: The money saved on deferred maintenance comes out at ten times the cost later. By the time you're done changing out the radiator, thermostat, water pump, and heater core it'll be right in the neighborhood of ten times the cost of maintaining the coolant. Then you'll still have loads of corrosion in the block that wouldn't otherwise have been there so you'll be behind the eight ball for the rest of time.

Think ya haven't got the money now? Wait until going half fast into it leads to cracks in the big expensive iron parts.

Live and learn...

took everyones advice and exchanged the 180 for a new 195.

as for the radiator, i already know it needs replacing. the lower right hand side of the rad is cool to the touch even after driving for a good half hour. id just rather spend $13 for a new stat and gasket before i spend the money for a new rad.

You got a lot of good advice from guys who know what they're talking about. Just changing out thermostat, when radiator is clogged, probably won't help the overheating problem.

Still wondering where vdubs was being rude??

He gave you an honest answer. I mean, dude seriously if you know your radiator is got one leg in the crapper and another on a banana peel, wtf are you asking what can cause over-heating when you know that already?

If your that far into it, with taking valve covers off your only a few steps away from checking your plenum, and you mineaswell do it.

And dude, we already know you ain't got money. Half us poor f'ers on here ain't got money neither, but we still gotta fix our crap.

No ****...But I for one don't want a newer truck, it's my work truck. If something goes wrong I know where to look and how to fix it and I personally think 4 door trucks are stupid, hence the Gen II which is stilll the best looking truck out there.

is the op still on? I would pull out that radiator and flush it upside down and right side up. work that thing over good. maybe some of those fins that didnt evaporate into the atmosspere wil come out. and run your hose up through the engine block while that rad is out. might buy some time, watch that temp. overheating kills these heads

He's the typical 19-year old these days who expects everyone to hold his hand and do the work for him rather than giving him information to work from. This is what happens when everyone gets a trophy. And whining about not having money is supposed to elicit sympathy The young kids who scrimp and save to repair their vehicles the right way are few these days.

Chase Lejeune -- man up, put on your big boy panties, and get the sand out of your mangina. People here who know me know I'll help anyone who asks, but I'm for damn sure not going to do all the work for you, nor am I going to tell you what you want to hear. Also, don't come into an established forum and tell people, "stop being rude" and "that wasn't very helpful".

I'll teach you to fish so you can eat for a lifetime, but only if you're willing.
