Default tire choices

hey yall. need some opinions on tires for my dads truck. i know his is isnt a second gen but mine is and i just feel too at home here with you guys to post anywhere else on DF. Hes got a 2011 2500 with the hemi with a 2.5 inch hbs leveling kit. Hit current wheel and tire set up is a set of 35x13.50x20 pro comp xterrains on some pro comp wheels. Trucks got just about 20,000 miles and the tires are going to crap fast. They look cool as can be but. looking for opinions on a good agressive looking tire that will still get decent mileage out of them. been reading around but everyone says differently so i figured id get yalls experiences. Right now my top two are nitto trail grapplers and the toyo open country mts. hed be happy with something that he can get about 30-40k out of.

getting 40k out of a mud tire might not be do-able.
but look at the maxxis bighorn radial. they're good looking tires and very good in mud and snow.

yeah i know that, figure if we can find something thatll at least make 30k itd be enough. ive heard of people getting 40k out of toyo open country mts but, it doesnt have to be an mt but still looking for something with a fairly aggresive design

maxxis are STUPID heavy.. good tire, just ridiculously heavy, which equates to diving economy..

I highly rec Nitto.. if he wants an A/T tire, the terra grappler will net around 45k before wearing.. if primary is roads, and not off it much- the dura grappler are fantastic.. I've got about 1k miles on dura's right now, and I'm pleased.. I expect to get around 60~65K out of these things.. should be doable.. 285/75/17's cost me around $250ea..

the cooper at3 is about the best A/T tire going right now, but finding a sale price will be tricky.. they are in high demand..

i had mine off the other day for something. got tired. went to put them back on and couldn't lift them. had to put a pry bar under them to lift em.

also true about mpg. i lost about 1.

on the pro side. they're hell in mud...

I second the Terra Grapplers ONLY if the truck stays on a paved road. Any mud what-so-ever and he'll be stuck. I had them.

My Falken Rocky Mountain ATS's (315/75/16 = 35x12.5.16) look great, handle great on/off pavement, and cost me $900 for the set incl mount/balance. They are wearing nicely so far, and are known for lasting over 60k miles on an HD 4x4 (when rotated properly of course).

If he needs an E-range tire though, look elsewhere.

What does he use the truck for, mainly highway commuting for does he frequently tow/haul a lot of weight?
If he loads the truck frequently, the Cooper S/T Maxx are great because of their load rating. It is true about the decrease in mpg but it's nothing major, and let's be real here...these are trucks that are big, heavy, and meant to do work; not a little 4-banger honda civic that gets great mileage in the 30-40 range. These kick *** in mud, rain, and snow, and they have an aggressive tread with a little sidewall bite.

If he mainly uses it as a highway commuter, the aforementioned A/T3s are one of the best all-terrain/all-season tire I've come across that maintains its integrity in almost all conditions and the mileage isn't really affected since it's got a 5-rib tread that helps for highway miles

My Dad just picked up some AT3's and they are awesome. They are on his '08 ram, but he's only off road every once in a while.
I also have always liked the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac, they were great for me in everything, including some light mud, might be a better choice if he did more off roading.
