This is what Wikipedia says and contradicts what I found earlier. So according to wiki he's got an RE.

46RH:
A renamed A518. A727 with overdrive and hydraulic control.
Applications:
1994-1995 Dodge Ram 2500/3500 V8
1993-1995 (Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2)
1995 Dodge Dakota 5.2l magnum v-8
1995 Dodge Ram Van 2500 5.2L Magnum V8
46RE:
A renamed second-generation A518. A727 with overdrive and electronic control.
Applications:
1996 Dodge Dakota V8 (Also 98-03 Dakota 5.9L R/T)
1996-2002 Dodge Ram 1500/2500/3500 V8
1998-2003 Dodge Durango 5.9L V8 (4WD or 2WD)
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9L V8 (4WD)

I have a 97 1500 extended cab, 5.2L, 4X4 and my build sheet indicates I have the 46RE (DGTS 4-Spd. Automatic 46RE Transmission).

If I am not mistaken, you can put a 95 tranny in a 98 but not the other way around.

They don't work either way around. RE has 8-pin connector and speed sensor on OD unit, whereas RH has 3-pin connector and no speed sensor. So naturally both have their own harness and PCM.

RH might be drivable on '98 truck but wouldn't have OD or TCC , and since the PCM doesn't know what the heck is going on there will be fault light present. And because RE trans has electronic governor, it most definitely won't work on older truck. I don't think that you could even get past first gear.

There's also some difference in length

Spot on. 94,95 only and maybe a 96. Gets iffy in 96. Just need to verify that the 96 is an RH for sure. And I would only use one out of a RAM.

And it has to also be out of a 4x4.

You all could have saved yourself some time and used the FAQ section.

How did you discern that he has a 4x4? I missed that....
