4x4 very hard shifting/SLAMING
The original dealer option paper work with the truck says I have the 231HD transfer case. Is the NP231the same as my 231HD? What the difference?
Because the website says "Fits: 1988-2000 Dodge, Chevy & GMC NP231, 242 & 243 transfer cases"

Difference is that HD version has larger bearings and wider chain. Other than that, they are similar.

What is the difference between the 231HD and the 231DHD? Also, mine doesn't have the "NV" prefix...
To my knowledge, HD and DHD are the same thing. NV stands for New Venture (manufacturer of the t-case), previously known as New Process (NP).
The first D stands for Dodge.
The P word... Here's a hint: It starts with "P," and ends with "lenum."
The "p" word???? Hmmm... Not sure i know what your talking about.. maybe ill start a thread lmao...

These trucks ARE shift on the fly. Check all u joints in front and rear driveshafts. And make sure and check there is good vacuum at the CAD.. Possible there is a issue with the CAD... Could also check the retaining ring on the rear tailhousing of the Transfer case.. They are known for leaving their place and causing issues.
DO NOT SHIFT INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE ON DRY PAVEMENT! PERIOD. It is shift on the fly( but NOT like newer vehicles that you are thinking how it should work) And here is a link to check the CAD. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/..._engagment.htm
And it's not all the info, but read the sticker on the back of the sun visor.

I'll have to check this out this weekend, because it snowed in Minnesota today, and I had the same problem with the 4x4 slaming while engaging and a loud clunk while disengaging.
Oh, and all the U-Joints were replaced in 2009, and only 15,000 miles were put on the truck since then...
