Default steering box leak

I noticed a leak on the bottom of my steering box today, its a 2000 ram 1500, looks like on the bottom where the pitarm(I think) bolts on, has a shaft with splines/ Can I just get the seals or do I have to get a new one? WHat is the seal I need?

Does your truck have a tendency to wander? If so, a new seal would be a very short-lived fix and you'd be better off with a new steering gear box.

The part name is either pitman shaft seal or sector shaft seal, depending upon where you buy it. You might also consider one of these cool steering box braces to head off future problems, especially if you end up replacing the gear box.

I had the same issue with my Durango's steering box (same one IIRC) ended up at www.rockauto.com and took advantage of there $99 rebuild service. Shipped it out on a Tuesday and had it back on Thursday

they also sell a seal kit IIRC ... i remember when i was looking knowbody sold a NEW one and could not find a reman for under $250.

orileys auto parts they are like advance auto and autozone. If you can find a part at advance or autozone then Orileys has it. lol Are the seals hard to put in? I seen a picture of the kit, has a bunch of metal rings and stuff with it. Do I have to remove the steering box?

Yes you have to remove it from the truck. And you'll need special tools to readjust it correctly. http://www.pavementsucks.com/tech/steeringbox.php

I found out its leaking from the top where the steering shaft connects and since I have to remove the box anyways, Im just gonna replace with a reman. one, anyone know the best place to get one? I think mine is the quad cab, it has the rear doors, but no handles on outside of truck.
