These would be the parts you need to replace.

You see the little teeth on the inside there? On mine on the left side is where mine broke; little pieces of teeth just on the otter edge.. anyone know what can cause that? Ive been watching it and no further breakage has occurred..

it's just on the outer edge of it.. not all the way in.

Edit; On the inside of the gear or the outside? Please help me there are two items with teeth in the pix, the clutch discs, the side gear inner teeth for the axle and outer teeth for the clutch discs..

For the outside teeth; In most cases that's caused by lack of using the lsd oil additive. The discs were metal on metal. If the teeth are gone on the gear then they are also gone on the clutch discs, in effect you have no or a very small amount of limited slip left.

The inside teeth for the side gear are for the axle shaft, if those are starting to go, thats not good. I have no idea why those would wear out.

I'm not 100% sure if your looking at it together; You have your center 'stud' against it you have a little round metal object between it and the gear.. in the very center of that gear on the left side in the center is where a small piece broke off from.. I took it to the dealer and they told me they had no idea what the part was and to buy a new LSD Unit $800 bucks..

I have not done anything other than the flush and refill.. there was no gunk or anything like that.. fluid actually looked pretty decent.. i think the truck had 128k on her when i did that.. she now has 144k

The only real thing i can think of is the occasional shift-clunk from the U joint when the tranny shifts hard but you have let off the accelerator.. lol

Here is what was on the magnet.

Here is an image of where it broke from.. right there behind the round thing you can see the little teeth in the center; that's where it came from. You see the round thing; then the c clip? looking thing then you can see the teeth as shown in this photo; right there where you see the teeth is where it broke from.

Thanks for the pix, that looks like a 8 3/4 diff or smaller. To be honest I have not taken one of those apart. It looks like there is a internal clutch-pac in the gear, I will go over my parts/service books and see what I can find.

You would be correct; I beleive its an 8.25 and I'm not trying thread-jack; just trowing it out there incase it was the same thing or not. No one has ever answered what the part that is broke on mine is; and fankly i kinda forgot about it cus it runs and drives well.. (at least as far as i know last time i checked)

spider gears in carrier, it looks like. the chunk not so bad. its the teeth, if they are getting uneven ware. not centered across the whole tooth it will wear out faster. blown a d35 right out the back of 5.2 grand cherokee modded running in 2wd. no chunks like yours just the uneven ware that lead to failure. probably get a jy axle for less then a carrier and install. just my thoughts if i had to do it again.

Anyone know of an upgrade for our rear-end's that decrease the slip? I mean i can go around a corner and one wheel wants to slip more than the other.. and when it's wet.. one will spin big time and fishtale... its kinda fun but gets on your nerves the day you really want to get moving..
