Default 96 Ram Starter will not come out!?

Hey guys I used the DIY section to get this far on the truck. I have the top bolt off and the bottom nut off for the starter, and the little clip that was on top. So all that is holding it on there from what I can tell is the stud on the bottom where the nut was screwed on.

Yet I cannot get the starter to budge one bit. Beat it with a hammer, yanked with bare hands, tried prying, and still no movement zero nothing. I searched the forum and one other member had this problem too. I tried emailing him but I am not sure if he does not come on anymore since I got no reply. So do you guys have any suggestions on what to do?

THanks!

It sounds like the starter gear has engaged the flywheel & may be stuck against it. Is the starter dead? It is will turn over at all, try tapping the key to make it turn over for a bit at a time to unsure it has a chance to let go the gear.

It will click several times and maybe occasionally turn the truck over

That sounds like low voltage or a bad starter - OR BOTH! if the voltage is good, then my last tip wont do a lot of good. Try GENTLY tapping on the starter - a rubber mallot is best for this & remember that the aluminum tranny housing can & will break if it it is hit just wrong, so be careful.

I'm assuming when you say low voltage your hinting at a bad battery right? Already replaced it with a new one. Taking the mallot to the tranny housing would be for what reasoning to break loose the starter from the fly wheel?

Note: I clicked the starter with the key a few times tried to move it and no luck. Turned the key over a couple more times the truck started up. I shut it down, disconnected the battery again, and tried to move the starter. No luck again. So is this still a starter issue do you think? And is the starter and flywheel still stuck engaged even though it fired the truck up and idled fine?

Good question. If it started & idled fine since this started, then I assume the starter gear is not still reached out & stuck to the flywheel. I could be wrong but I don't think so. The voltage comment was in reference to the voltage being too low to make the engine turn over successfully when you turn the key over. Too low of voltage & you get clicking sounds, but a bad starter can cause that sound too. If you tap around on the starter, just use caution if you decide to go further around to tap on the tranny housing. Try spraying some rust penetrating stuff around the joining parts of the bell housing & starter.

What are you working on?

If starter starts it, why are you changing it?

Are you sure you didn't break your bolt?

Yep. I read the whole thing. And I always question when I think someone may be looking in the wrong direction.

Have you had the truck long?
