2001 5.9 only starts on 3rd try everytime. Help!
There can be a number of reasons this happens. There is no simple single reason. Are you looking for some diagnostic help as to where you might start---------the best start if you really are trying to repair this yourself is to get a Factory Service Manual. Then start by checking the simple stuff first.
You might also want to elaborate the info on your truck, mileage, recent tune up----or not. Any info helps all the people you hope will read this help you.

try turning the key on and letting it sit for a few seconds or until the fuel pump shuts off if it starts first try then you are not letting it have enough time to pressurise the fuel rail/injectors. preasure regulator bad or fuel pump going out?
My '99 1500 318 did this everytime until the fuel pump quit. Replaced fuel pump and it works great now. There is a check valve in the fuel system and fuel pressure bleeds off, if you turn the ignition switch on and off 3 times without going to start I bet you it will start immediatly. The only way to fix is change the fuel pump. Mine did this for 3 years before the fuel pump quit. Works great now.
fuel pump is expensive, so check pressure at the test port on the fuel rail. should be 49psi +/-5
shade tree method to test is to turn on ignition, put out your cigarette, then press the test port valve (looks like valve stem) estimate the force of the gas stream that hits you directly in the eyeball, should be 49psi.
