01 2500 sounds like rocks rolling around in can
I have a new issue as well as bringing back my old thread "01 2500 shaking while driving". I have had front end issues with this truck since I bought it. I have a constant bouncing problem that no matter what I do the truck feels like its bouncing with some wobble. I now have a new cause of aggravation. When driving it sounds like rocks rolling around in a can. The sound doesn't stop until the truck stops, applying the break doesn't make a difference in the sound.
So my question is what can be causing this sound?
My second question if any one wants to jump in, is what can be causing the bouncing/wobble?It happens at all speeds and is amplified when going faster. All I can think of is a bad wheel bearing on the drivers side, but i have no play when I jack it up.Here is a run down of what has been done already,
1. Replaced all tie rods and tie rod ends
2. New upper and lower ball joints on both sides
3. 4 new tires, road forced balanced, 33 inch BF mud terrains
4. went back to stock tires and rims, road forced balance
5 New track bar and bushings
6. replaced u joints and seals on drive shafts
7. had drive shaft checked and balanced
8. 4 new monroe shocks
9. 2 inch leveling spacer ( bounced before and after install)

is the sound from spark knock (pinging) ? as in, does it do it under load, and let up when you ease up off the gas pedal. and increase when you lay into the gas pedal, especially going up hill.
for the vibration, put the truck up on jack stands and run it to see if you can reproduce it. be very careful of moving parts.

dhvaughan, the sound is definitely from something in the front end. The engine doesn't ping at all and the plugs were changed not to long ago. I first thought maybe its the bearings rolling around inside the wheel bearing. I haven't had a chance to take it out yet and check it but wouldn't be the first time I had a bad wheel bearing that didn't have any play.
if it goes Clack Clack Clack Clack when the front wheels are turning its the front axle u-joints.
with truck parked and NOT in 4wd. grab the inner section of the front axle and rotate it back and forth. Clack Clack?

Good idea, I will try that tomorrow .
Checked out the ujoint at the axle today. No play at all. Next is jack it up and see if I get any play in the wheel bearing. With everything I have replaced Im leaning towards wheel bearing. Is it possible for it to be gone with no play ? Maybe loose on the inside ?

How many miles are on your truck? Given all that you have replaced on it and if its got over 100,000 miles, I would bet the wheel bearings are bad. I recently replaced both of mine at 130,000 miles. One wheel bearing was definitely bad and had been bad for quite some time. Jacked the front wheel up and could feel play in the bearing when grabbing the wheel with my hands at the top and bottom of the tire and pushing in and out to check for bearing play.. There is a good YouTube how-to video on changing it (EdsGarage).
