Default 5.2L swap out for 3.9L. (2001 ram1500)

I have searched the forum and all I get is 3.9L to 5.2L swap out.
I have a 2001 ram 1500 sport 4x4 with a 5.2L v8.
I the 5.2L is fine working order, but I would like to improve on the gas milage a bit.
The truck doesnt have to do any hard driving or hauling. just run around for the daughter. (and me).
So if the swap works one way, it should go the other??
I would think the tranny gearing could be an issue, but not sure.
It looks as if its a strait bolt in, a few wiring changes.. I think.

any ideas??

thanks

Yup, the V6s are underpowered for such a heavy truck, you wont see any significant (if any) mpg increase.

I had a standard cab short bed 2wd with a V6 in it and the gas mileage was just as bad as my current club cab 4x4 5.2...

Not worth the time or money

are you crazy? youll spend more time and money with a 238 that will get the same mpg. my dakota got about 13 and my current truck with a 360 gets 10. tell me if 3 mpg is really worth that much to ya?

If you're really interested in a MPG increase in your Ram, install a 4BT like MooChoff

Ignoring the Ram/Dakota comparison, 3MPG is quite significant in that mileage range. If you drove 1000 miles a month at 10MPG and $4 gas, that's $400, at 13MPG that's $307.

I think a 3.9 in a Ram is silly and probably won't gain anything, especially with an automatic. A 3.9 in Dakota with a 5 speed is capable of 20+MPG.

And thats in a dakota....trust me, 3.9s suck. They're unbalanced, 90% of the time idle rough because of it, and they suck fuel worse than a v8...way to underpowered even to be in a little dakota, let alone a ram...you want fuel mileage, spend $1500 on a little honda as a commuter car...youll save money on fuel and the overall cost of the swap...or just drive your truck and be easy on the throttle driving habits can cause a huge difference in fuel mileage.

that is not true. mine was a 5 speed although it did have the stock 31s at first got 13, then with my 32s it decreased just a little, not noticeably though. even babying it it was impossible to pull 20 with mixed driving, maybe that number for only strictly highway.
