Default 4x4 dash indicator light issue

As I was driving on the highway, I noticed the 4x4 indicator light on the dash come on. I was not in 4 wheel drive. I was wondering if this could indicate a problem and/or cause a problem. Could it be just a sensor? Thanks for your help. This is my first Dodge and first 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Check to make sure 4x4 engages and disengages. Likely it's the switch on CAD (central axle disconnect) that turns the 4wd light on/off. Might also be a vacuum leak in one of the CAD lines. Read through the factory service manual (which can be downloaded for free in the FAQs section) or a Hanes manual and check out the cad system for which lines and switch to look at.

the light is turned on/off by a simple 2 wire contact switch on the drivers end of the cad. when the 2 wires are closed, the light is on. when open, the light is off.

you might have a switch malfunction, with the contact ball flopping around (most likely), or you may have a cad malfunction with the shift fork moving over and contacting the switch.

disconnect the elec connector, remove, inspect, test the switch on the end of the cad. its not too expensive. $15-20 or so.
