Try adjusting the rear band. If that doesn't work, rebuild time.

drop the pan, loosen lock nut, torque adjusting screw to 72 in. lbs., back off 2 turns, tighten lock nut, re-install pan, fill trans with fluid.

Just for shiggles, if the rear band is out of adj. If you put the gear shifter in 1, it won't move forward either.

I checked and it does move.forward in 1. Acts like normal in 1 and in reverse it will creep backwards but.if I give it any throttle it just revs up.

My 46RE lost reverse, but not 1st. This is what I found, band adjustment fixed the problem and reverse is still working perfectly:

so tonight i dropped the pan and readjusted the rear band to spec. the fluid looked great. nice cherry red color didnt smelled burned at all. no metal shavings or anything in the pan. so cleaned the old fluid out the pan and put a new filter and gasket in and put it together. i filled it back up with fluid, let her idle for 10 mins in idle while i cleaned everything off the ground. (im working in a parking lot on base) then i put it into drive and engages and drove forward just fine but then i went to back up and it still isnt working. it works good enough to barely move in reverse but any throttle and it just revs up and slips.

any ideas????
thanks
