Default 1997 Ram 1500 5.9L/46RE Wierd 4X4 Noise

I just started this after i got the new transmission and wheel bearing/balljoints in on the right side and i have a bearing going on the Driver side. I had it in 4H then stick it in 2H and it unlocked but it made it almost 15 miles then started grinding really loud. i know my Axle seal is leaking on the front but it just started this grinding stuff. I also found that going above about 35 mph stopped it. I also just replaced my Vacuum actuator when i did the rest of the transmission and reconnected the Muffler to the Cat.

You need to check vacuum at the CAD as described in the article. http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/repair/..._engagment.htm

Thanks Zman. That helped out alot really. I think my shift fork is all messed up but, that still doesnt describe why i can drive 25 miles after disengaging 4H then it starts grinding.

This does not sound good.

Take out the front driveshaft, if convenient enough for you, and see if anything changes. Remember to sharpy or scribe both ends of the d/s to ensure reinstall the same way.

Think I would remove the CAD, pull the axle out a couple inches and remove the shift collar and shift fork. Sounds like its slowly trying to engage the axles.

That's assuming the grindings coming from the CAD area. Could be something else altogether different, like maybe the diff., or drivers side bearing getting worse, although mine got real bad and never made a sound.

Anyway I wouldn't drive it that way for fear the shift collar went a little too far and started tearing up splines on the axles or the shift collar itself if that's what it is.

Because the vacuum is not holding the front axle in 2wd drive. You need to find the leak.
