Default How do I tell if I have a 42RE transmission?

I recently acquired a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD Automatic and it had a small problem that I thought I could fix easily and quickly. The transmission pan is rusted out and leaks quite a bit of transmission fluid. I was just ticketed this morning for it and I now have 10 days to fix it. I went to several auto parts stores and none of them carried what I needed, so I checked eBay and I found this, but the part says it is for 42RE transmissions and I have no clue what that means. How do I find out if this is the correct part for my truck?

The 42RE was only used on V6 trucks...

You have a 46RE. The link you provided is the wrong part, looks too small.

Look at this one:

How do you know that? Since we don't know what motor he has?

And to the OP, order one of these regardless. http://www.dodge.com/wccsapp/univers...ull&category=U

I did jump the gun a bit since he didn't say if he has a V8 or V6. Oops.

So used to people having having V8s......

I have a V8 5.2 litre engine, which means I have a 46RE transmission? So the part I linked would be the wrong one then? This one will work then? I'm going to try a local parts warehouse and if I have no luck I will be ordering the part online. Thank you for the responses.

You indeed have a 46RE. Don't forget to order a build sheet from the link I provided.

Thanks for the help, I will be ordering the part off ebay and I hope it gets here soon. Also, I'm not sure what the other link is for, it just sends me to the contact dodge page.

That is the page that will allow you to request a build sheet for your truck.
