Default Odd burning smell

So the other day I started up my ram and let it warm up for close to 10 minutes it was about 30 degrees out side before i took off. I only drove 15 miles to a buddy's house most of it was highway. But when I got to my buddy's house It smelled like something was burning. So i popped the hood, and sure enough the smell was coming from under the hood. Me not knowing anything about vehicles I let it all cool down for a while and came back to it and checked the anti freeze and oil. I still have 1000 miles before I change it. Both the anti freeze and oil seemed fine. now the oil gauge in the truck dropped just a tad during the drive. so I parked my truck over night and got back in and took it on another 15 mile drive to my moms house to pick my sister up and drop her off at school. which was another 5 miles. The oil gauge stayed at where it normally is out the whole trip I went back to my moms house opened the hood and it didn't smell like any thing was burning. It was a little bit warmer about 45 degrees. I was told to buy a new thermostat and replace it.

I'm not sure what could be wrong or anything. Any help would greatly be appreciated

My daughters car picked up a plastic trash bag on the exhaust pipe...smelled burning plastic for days before I finally found it.

No prob. So, can you describe the smell? Is it a plastic burning smell? Oil? Gas? Wood like? Have you checked the engine out to see if anything is dripping anywhere? Just checking the level of fluids won't tell you anything if it's just dripping. You need to take a flashlight and go start looking at stuff real good. That would help narrow it down.

I remember I had a weird burning smell that smelled like hashbrowns for the longest time.

Figured out it was the coolant leaking out of my timing cover burning off.
