Well wouldn't you know it... About the time I get that truck to run great, the trans eats itself. A buddy found me a used NV4500, so I can upgrade from my now-junk NV3500, but it will have to wait until a little more cash rolls in. Oh well. The joys of building things.

 

So another mighty NVxxxx eats the dust....

 

This year must be the great transmission crapping year... Lost 1st and reverse on our GC! WTF...

 

I cant complain too much. It hung in there longer than I expected really. It was heavily used when I put it in a few years ago, and its obviously designed for a lighter duty truck than my 'ole 1 ton. I don't drive very hard in that truck, but it did see quite a few load-hauling miles. It served me well for a while, but I'm ready for an upgrade.

 

NV4500 will be a nice upgrade. Good luck with the swap.

 

Got my new-to-me NV4500. It has tons of miles on it, but I think It should serve me well. From what I understand, they are pretty easy to rebuild, if I do need to. I have it mostly installed now, just waiting for the lube to show up. Its pretty tough finding anything that will work in one of these, around here. Ill let you know how it drives in a day or two.

 

I just ordered amsoil's gl-4 fluid from their website when I did mine. A bit cheaper than the castrol syntorq crap but just as good. Thats the downside with the NV4500, it is the only transmission that uses that fluid.

 

I have been running my new-to-me trans for a few weeks now. It shifts well, doesn't make excessive noise, and hasn't popped out of gear, so I think I am just going to keep running it as is. I was going to run the Amsoil version of the Castrol Syntorque, but I couldn't find a dealer near me that was willing to put the effort into getting it for me. So, instead I ordered this stuff: http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=140&pcid=7 The price was the best I had found for any product that states it is specifically for NV4500's. Also, it was easy to locate and order. I ordered 5 quarts from an Ebay seller for about $70. Seems to be working great. Drastically improved the shift quality and smoothness after changing from the junk that was in the case.

 

Havent been around in a while. Just wanted to give a quick update. Truck still runs great! EFI swap was worth every bit of the headache it took to make it happen. NV4500 is holding up very well, and in a couple of weeks, Ill be putting it all to the test. I'm hauling everything I own, almost 2000 miles, from SE Iowa, to NW Washington. I have new carpet, sound deadener and a different fuel pump in route to me, before the trip. Should make for a nicer, quieter ride. Also, will probably be having my driveshaft rebuilt before I go. (Slip yoke has a little play, and hums at interstate speeds.)
