46RE to NV4500 in a 97 ram 1500

Looking at the tech manual, the NV3500 has a higher 1st gear than does the NV4500, however it still is much lower than the automatic (either 46RE or 47RE). So it just depends. If you use it like a 2500, go ahead and get the NV4500. I hadn't heard of starting in 2nd gear before, Dodge doesn't reccomened it due to the clutch, but I assume if you have a better aftermarket clutch it would be fine.

I know im just basically jumpin in on your guys' conversation, but this sounds like a good idea for whenever my transmission goes out (mine has 225000 miles). I just wanted to know... the nv3500 WILL fit straight onto the 318 nd stock transfer case with no modifications?? Does anything have to be done with electronics or sensors?

For example, 2000RPM in NV4500 1st is roughly 9MPH with 32" tires and 3.55s. In NV3500 1st it's 13mph, still too low for average driving. NV4500 second puts you at 18MPH. NV3500 second is 2.32:1, which is a little high to take off with but doable, I usually only start in 2nd from rolling stops. NV3500 2nd gets you 23MPH.
For reference, the 5.0 Mustang typically had a 3.35:1 1st gear, with 2.73s and 25" tires (a guess), the same 2000RPM in 1st is 16MPH, which is right in line with using 2nd with an NV4500. And you still have the benefit of that granny gear when you need it.

Starting in 2nd is common with any tranny with a "granny" gear. 2nd gear in a NV4500 is 3:1, perfectly reasonable for starting in, assuming the axle gears and tire size is reasonable as well. 5.61:1 is just too damn low to start out in without a load in most situations.
