Default Rear Diff question....

So the sticker on the hood of my truck has all the info about the truck on it.... And says that I have a limited slip 9.25 Diff. Is that still considered a "open diff" or is this a "posi" rear end?

Why is it that when I take off in sand only one rear wheel spins? If it is Posi both wheels should be spinning at the same time.... Right?

it should. the clutches are probably worn out.

jack up one wheel and try to rotate it. if it rotates easily, either your clutches are shot or your rear end has been changed out.

So if the clutches are bad.... do you have to replace the diff, or can the clutches be replaced?

a rebuild kit replaces the clutches and clips. no personal experience, but it requires some tricky compression of the springs to get it back together. research it before you commit.

edit - example of the rebuild kit.

edit - one method of rebuild, removing diff. i think someone had a way to do it w/o removing the diff.

Yep one guy said he did the work with the carrier in the rear end, don't know how he managed that? I have rebuilt so many of these it hurts, in my op its bench work, but hey I am older and have fuzzed back parts. If you have the $$$ ditch the Trac-loc and get some other type of posi or locker, prices range from $400 and up. The FSM covers the rebuilding of the Trac-loc very well.

How long does it usually last after you rebuild the rear diff? And is there a way to prevent them from going bad.... like keeping clean fluid in the rear diff and not abuse the hell out of it?
