Default Tranny Rebuild Should I do it myself?

It looks like the TC is going out on my tranny thus meaning I will need to rebuild. I wanted to know how hard it would be to rebuild it myself of if I should just go to a shop and get it done. How much it would cost in parts to do it myself, and any upgrades I should do while I am in there. I am fairly mechanically inclined but I have never rebuilt a tranny before. The most I have done with a tranny is filter kits, a shift kit, and swapping one out before. Also does anyone know what would cause the TC to go bad after only 85000 miles?? It seems kind of early to be having an issue like this.

There is a thread in the DIY section of a rebuild.. Check that out and see what all is involved and make your decision.

Yeah, I checked it out first and I'm still on the fence, but leaning more and more to having a shop do it. That way if it fails right away the wife can't blame me!!!

Are there any upgraded parts that I should request the shop put in the rebuild?? If I get a rebuild I hope to never have to mess with it again. The damn thing should have lasted longer the first time as far as I am concerned.

What kind of budget are you working with? If you got the money get a PATC Mega Viper.. It will outlast your truck most likely

I was really hopping to keep it under $2 grand. I know I can get one at a local Tranny rebuild factory for anywhere between $1200-1800. Although I have yet to talk to the local tranny shop.
