For people seeking front u-joint help
Just taking the time to tell you all of my problem and the fix.. Such as it was. I had thought I had a front u-joint problem. I heard a popping coming from what I thought was the left front tire. Having just done the rear drive shaft u-joints I focused on the front. I started by removing the front drive shaft... Kind of a pain in the a$$ due to the bolts are very close to the ujoint on the part of the shaft closest to the transfer case. I solved this problem by using a super long extension on my ratchet. Anyhow I took the front shaft off and placed it in my garage and took the truck out to see if the popping went away. Nope still there. Now I know that the 3 u-joints on the front shaft are not the cause. I then took off both front tires and looked for nails or rocks. Nothing. I took a small prybar and carefully placed them in my u-joints on the front axel and tried to see if I could see any play in the ujoint. none seen. So at this point the brakes got a looking over and I inspected the front end. Still without a clue to the noise and very mad I thought while I had the tires off I should grease the front end and might as well hit the new u-joints on the rear drive shaft. To my surprise one of the rear ujoints took 2-3 squirts of grease before it started to back up into the gun. The other rear u-joint took like half a squirt. Hmmmm. I put the truck back together and took it out on the road. Sure enough the popping is gone.... Seems the rear u-joint was popping not the front after all this...!! Half mad and half happy I bolted the front shaft back on and did a few laps around the block.... Close as I can figure I might have a factory defective new u-joint ( only has 1k on it ) or the shop that put it in never greased it properly. Not sure. But my moral to the story is before doing any shaft removal make sure the noise is coming from the right area. Go so far as to grease all your points before tracking down the source of the noise. Had I greased the truck 1st and drove it I could have saved myself hours of time.... And never assume just cause you put it new joints in the rear shaft that It wont be them again. I'll be keeping an eye on the rear joint to see if its going to fail on me or hold up now. Hope this helps someone.
