Hello!

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 4x4 extended cab that has begun making a knocking or banging noise somewhere underneath when I go over bumps or uneven pavement. The weird part is that it only does it when the rear wheels hit the bump. You can sometimes even feel the noise under the cab depending on how big the bump is.

My mechanic and myself have both checked underneath, replaced the rear shocks, and can't find anything that is loose.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Spare tire?

 

We've checked the spare tire and it's tight. Even took it off and drove it and still have the same noise.

 

Check front lower shock mount bolts, exhaust and exhaust heat shields, gas tank straps, bed and body mounts and steering column bushing where it exits the firewall under the brake booster, tranny and or transfer case mounts. Also remove the tail gate and see if it still makes the noise.

 

Ok, I'll try those. It's just strange how it only makes the noise when the rear wheels hit the bump. I kind of figured it was something that was connected to the rear end of something, maybe the driveshaft, but it doesn't seem loose or anything.

 

Also , if you have a tool box, make sure the lid isn't loose and bouncing up and down. You might also check and make sure all the JD bottles are out from the under the tool box.

 

No, no toolbox. But if the noise doesn't go away soon, the JD is a possibility!

 

Make sure there isn't one or two rolling around behind your seat or under it for that matter. Got to check all the angles here. LOL

 

Check carrierbearing(2peace driveshaft)when there ready to go they make all kinds of noise.Just a thought............
