I have this happen from time to time. I've only noticed it when i'm driving. never seems to happen when i'm not moving and it doesn't stay on when the truck is off.

Back to the OP:
I have a 97 as well and i have had my gen light come on only 1 time in the 3 years i have owned my truck. my GEN light came on when my battery was dead. by dead i mean it had a cell out. according to the guage on my dash my alt is always charging around 15v (the needle is always on the right of the 14v). when i put my voltmeter on the battery it is charging at 14.2V.

Did your GEN light go out? if not i'd check the voltage of your battery resting and the charging voltage.
