Default Idle Issues

I have a 98 1500 4x4 5.9 and i have recently put a different engine in it and it has idol problems. Its an intermittent problem. The truck will run fine until i come to a stop sign/light or let it warm up on cold mornings. It sounds like to me like it loads up like its carburated, until it almosts dies but when i mash the pedal to the floor for a second or so and let back off it will run fine. And every so often it will do it drivin down the road. So I got the idea one day when it happened i put it in neutral and held the throddle at the same as if i was still under power, and givin a couples seconds it smooths back out. Thinkin the transmission might have some to do with it, be it vaccuum lines or whatever. I was thinkin it might be the TPS but im not possitive. Anyone have any ideas?

The PCM knows when the trans is not in gear, and leans the mixture out accordingly. If you are indeed running rich, what you are experiencing would be completely expected.

I don't think it would be a TPS problem... but, it sure wouldn't hurt to test it.... (got a multimeter?) Is your temp gauge reading 'normally'?

So... when you first start it, it idles okay for about a minute then starts sucking wind? Is that the scoop?

Theres timea its a little longer but this has happened with the previous engine that was in it. It sounds like a drag car with a huge cam in it, to a point, then the idle lowers until it will almost die.

Unplug the front O2 sensor, and see if that doesn't improve its attitude any. If it does, replace it.

That's why I asked. Sounds like an oxygen sensor problem.
