Default 95 1500 RAM issues

New member. Have 95 RAM 1500 Ext cab. 5.9l Automatic. Truck history, original engine (241K) replaced transmission at 220K (year ago). 2 Issues.
Occasionally my speedometer will flutter or quite working (drop to 0mph) and the tach will run higher than normal about 10 seconds later check engine light comes on (this can happen at any speed). I stop, shut off engine and then start engine again.....speed, tach normal check engine light off....Transmission indicator at times does not line up in reverse position (have to put trans into "neutral" to back-up, not always and this has been happening since I had the rebuilt tranny installed). I have been reading thru some of the post and think that the speed sensor has gone bad, is there something else I should also look at (since the CEL does not stay on when I think about heading to a shop or parts store)? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey... Have you checked it to see if its throwing any codes? I found this procedure on the internet:

Turn the key, off and on 3 times and watch the engine light. It will flash in pairs of two. The first will be flash...flash.flash. That is 12. It will always be first. That says the battery has been disconnected at some time. The trouble codes will be next. The last will be 55.
Go to this site (not sure I can put the link here or not just search the term allpar), maybe for a better explanation, and the meaning of the codes

Hope that helps and best of luck. By the way don't forget to check the codes several times just in case.

one thing that I noticed today is that when the speedometer went crazy today, the odometer also quit working.....do you think I need to clean the end of the odometer cable?

Don't think there is a a cable. I think there is a gear driven VSS down on the tailshaft of the trans/t-case (2 or 4 wd) that sends a signal to the cluster. A loose connection would give the symptoms you describe, (or, a failing VSS too....)

When the speedo quits working, the PCM no longer knows how fast the truck is going, so, it drops it out of O/D, and/or unlocks TCC. Normal behavior, fix one problem, and you will fix them all.

Would explain why the a/c doesn't work. Try jumping the pressure switches (one at a time) and see if the compressor runs. (is there any pressure left in it?)

Rechecked the CEL code was "15" which makes sense (since my A/C works great).....found the change out procedures in my Chiltons....let you know the results after I check/change out the speed sensor's (book says there are 3 (2 front and 1 rear)...Thanks

Those speed sensors are for the ABS, on that year truck, the speedo is driven off the sensor in the trans/t-case.
