Default only right side 4wheel drive engages

so after just about new everything in the front end of my 97 1500 4x4 it snows ... I engage the 4x4 and as Im buried in the snow in the driveway I notice only my right side front tire is spinning and Im not making much headway. So then Im driving down the road... yes in the snowy crappy roads, and my front end is pulling to the right.. this has me wondering if my left side (drivers side)is even engaging. Shouldnt my left be spinning as well when the right side is spinning? Could this issue of the left not engaging cause my pulling to the right? What would cause the left side not to engage when the right side does?

If you dont have an limited slip of some sort in both diffs, even in 4wd its only 2wd, one front and one rear. The power will go to the wheel with less grip, front or rear.
