Backfires, runs like crap, at the end of my rope, please help
I have a 1996 dodge ram 2500. I got raped when purchasing this truck. I will never trust anyone again.
It idles ok for a min, then it will drop idle, catch itself and bring the idle back up. I let it run for an hour and it did the same thing over and over.
This is a list of what I have replaced. Im sick of throwing parts at it
Cat- searched this forum alot and cats seem to cause alot of problems so i replaced it
O2 sensors
cap and rotor
wires
plugs
all sensors on throttle body
coil - replaced with a known working part..not new
Starter
Transmission - was told it could be torque converter dragging, and these trannys go out often, so I replaced it with new rebuilt 46re, and brand new converter
Transfer case - had nothing to do with my engine problem but It needed it
crankshaft sensor...twice
battery
battery wires
intake gasket
plenum pan and gasket
cooling sensor
manifold gaskets
( dam that was a lot of money)
Compression on the cylinders checked out good when i got the truck
I just ordered a new timing kit ( chain and gears)
Also ordered a new coil, ACCEL 140021 Mopar Remote Super Coil
also just ordered a new dist
I dont know what else to do. I have looked for vacuum leaks and can only find one. Its where the 4x4 actuator is, it is broken, so i ordered a new one today too
What am I over looking. guess im going to order a cam sensor too.
Please help. I try not to post here, with all my other rams i find my info by searching here, this time im stuck.
sorry, 5.9l no codes
and cam sensor looks like a piece of felt, wtf is that?

What was the condition of the old Catalytic Converter?
What brand O2 sensors did you get? If Bosch, then toss those in the garbage, NTK or Denso.
What plugs did you get?
You've just described idle condition. What about during driving?
No shiz you tossed parts at it!!!
Edit: Have you checked your fuel pressure?

I believe 02 where bosh, ill toss them and order denso. Cat was gutted. guess kid i got it from did it. He had no e check where he lives.
Have not really driven it far, Feels like firing order off, but i know its not. Checked it three times.
Yes, more parts on this truck then other three combined
Have not checked fuel pressure. Seems ok when i press in valve on rail, shoots everywhere. Ill get a gauge and check that too....think bad fuel pump would cause this? Ill order new pump too. Maybe Ill get lucky and not need it. But f it, ill add it to the order
ok, just ordered these from rock auto. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...802&cc=1435900

I'm leaning towards proper O2 sensors and vac lines....
Do you have a Haynes manual? If not, get one since you are willing to drop on parts (needed or not). Go to the DIY subforum here and find the threads containing the Factory Service Manual and Parts Manual.
Get the vac line condition nailed down.

I have Bosch 02 in my truck not one problem (approx one year), so 50/50 call if that will change anything one bit. Check the rest as suggested.
Flame on
WN you did not get informed by me that I changed from ntk to bosch

yes, i have haynes and chiltons. I checked each line while truck was at idle with carb cleaner. Could not find a thing.
Ill replace all of them, one by one and make sure they are routed correct.
Would the one going to 4x4 actuator cause all this? I know its unplugged and just sucking air. Plug it for now?
Im willing to do whatever I have to to get her running right... All my work buddies are ford or chevy guys, sick of hearing about my "crappy" dodge.

how dare you leave me out of the loop.
It's all good. Every sure thing is only 99% anyways
Trying to systematically break down his situation......

If you're vacuum line going to the t/case is just "sucking air" then you definitely need to plug it, just find a bolt and shove it in there or pinch it with a pair of vice grips, that alone would cause it to run like crap
