A properly set up motive, or yukon, should be silent. If it whines/howls, it is out of spec.
I would tend to agree with you under the caveat of installation was top notch.
Assuming installation is top notch, the more expensive aftermarket gears will be less of a noise issue (Yukon). This is b/c they have better tolerances (closer to OEM).
This doesn't mean the cheaper alternatives are all that much worse, only that break-in time will be longer. Meaning extra care taken on that process (maybe >1 fluid change).
Ebay. Just did mine this week. The Durango and Dakota have the same gears As the Ram 1500. ( double check years though). I bought a diff from a salvaged wreck $150. Opened it up and the gears were pristine.
I use Richmond gear sets. They've been making good gears for a long time. About $220 for my 9.25.
Stay away from American gear if you want quiet, they have a prewarning that they may be noisy.
