Default 1500 trans issues

im looking to repair my truck that is having some shifting issues and id like to get some kind of idea of where to start. the transmission some times gets stuck in 1st gear, it does not happen all the time and seems to be a bit random but this is what it does.

normally it starts out in 2nd gear and shifts into 3rd, and o/d just fine but every now and then it starts in 1st and you feel there is far more power than normal. 1/2 throttle will roast the 265/75 tires. the only way to make it shift out of 1st is to speed up to around 45MPH then let off the throttle, as it slows down at around 30mph it realizes it wants to be in second and it will shift. from here it drives fine and shifts fine untill you slow back down into the 1st gear speed range. the o/d does not work on the truck, the light comes on but there is no change in speed, the o/d will not shut off. however i was driving with a very heavy load (way the hell over maximum hauling capacity) and durring this trip the O/D turned off on its own... maybe it was a fluke but it was strange to say the least.

its a 2001 1500 sport, 5.2l quad cab short bed. 4X4.

here it is durring that heavy trip: 1500 trans issues-pjqngl.jpg

The overdrive off light comes on when you press the button. (at least, it should) when it comes on of it's own accord, that generally implies your trans is overheating..... the Trans temp light should come on shortly thereafter.....

Whats you fluid level look like? What does the fluid look like? When was the last time the trans was serviced? What makes you think O/D isn't working?

1. Pull the speed sensor in the side of the trans tailshaft. It is magnetic and will tell you if your trans is roasting itself.
2. Pull the pan (regardless of the fluid color on the stick), flush everything out if possible, replace the filter and fluid.
3. Don't drive any more until you at lease do 1 and 2.
4. As a side note, the speed/ABS sensor that sits on top of your rear differential will keep your trans fron shifting out of first at low speeds if it is bad. It also keeps your speedo from registering until 20-25 mph. I replaced mine for about $30. Worth it.

Is this the same trans you found a broken snap ring in?

And heavily loaded, driving in OD, is foolish. Need to know how to properly operate vehcile. OD is not made for ehavy loads, pulling trailer, etc. That will toast a tranny pretty quick.

yes this is the same trans that the broken snap ring is from. no repair to the snap ring has been made. i will check the sensors and do a trans flush. the fluid smells burnt and at the last change i put some transX in to help with seals and such. there was no other large parts of metal in the trans pan aside from about a 4" section of a snap ring. as for driving in OD im well aware of what it is for but if the truck refuses to turn off OD then there is nothing more i can do on that front. if she burns up she burns up.

Broken snap ring? Burned smell in fluid? I would not waste the cost of new fluid. ATF+4 is too expensive to waste, and it appears to be on it's last leg. Time to swap or rebuild.

That's what I thought a year ago
