Default Timing Question

Hey guys, I've got a quick question for ya. Last night I checked the timing on my buddy's Dad's 1995 Dodge Ram and it was advanced 15 degrees. Since he didn't want it advanced we tried to just turn the distributor to decrease the timing back down to 0 degrees but the truck would die at the slighiest turn of the distributor. So my question is did we forget a step or something? I know on an S10 I had, I always had to disconnect something from the computer. I hope all this makes sense. Thanks for your time and help guys.

Default RE: Timing Question

I have a 96 5.9, should be the same. Look at the white sticker under the hood, emissions sticker i think. mine says that timing is set at factory. book says distributor will not change timing, any change in dist. will be corrected by computer. computer needs reprogramed/tuned to adjust timing. thats how i understand it.
