Question 46re only uses 2nd and 3rd gears

I own a 2001 dodge ram 1500 sport with a 46re transmission. It does not use 1st and overdrive gears. Also when shifting from 2nd to 3rd it is at 20 mph. Can anyone help me on the problem because it is costing me a lot in gas.

Sounds like it's in limp mode, any codes?

You should check out Sonnax transmissions. They have a sure cure kit that will help u rebuild the throttle body in your 46re. They will send h a catalog that will also help u further diagnose your tranny issues

Jumping a little fast. Sonnax kit will help shifting...if tranny is good. Not if it is in limp mode.

Check fluid level (in neutral). See if fluid smells burned.

May have to drop the pan and see waht is lurking in there such as snap ring, excess shavings, etc. Could be gov pressure sensor and/or solenoid also. It is not going into OD because you are not getting TCC lockup either.

Limp mode is not a good thing and should be diagnosed ASAP, but something stupid can do it too, like an 02 Simm. Don't ask me how I know.

Start with the simple, after checking the fluid level check the throttle valve cable. Those check out good drop the pan and have a look, nothing unusual? I would at this point pull the valve body and go through it, but at the very least since the pan is off, adjust the bands and change the filter and see what happens.

VB is least likely probability for lack of 1st gear. Most likely direct drum clutches or band adjustment or dropped anchor.

Can you manually use 1st gear? Might also help with the problem I aint an expert on trannies but I've had the same problem and it was the downstream 02 sensor doing something weird with the governor pressure solenoid.

I have seen an electrical problem similar to this when the symptom of no 1st or O.D. gears occurred.

The wiring for the 02 sensor shorted out upon the four primary wires of the O2 Sensor Circuit itself with one wire which was a common ground shared amongst other important circuits such as the crank sensor circuit.

This was found to be causing issues with the potential to affect many aspects of drivability and in cases of rough running or lack of power , this was itself likely to be the potential cause.
