horsepower
Depends on year. I know in '99 (my truck) 5.2 = 230HP 5.9=250HP. Factory ratings on older ones may have even been the same, but I know the pre-'97 5.2s had more power (higher compression) than the later ones.
I don't quite understand the question. Are you asking why there is a difference in the rating....as in how the engines are different? [>:]
If that's the question, then the answer is that the bore and the stroke are different.
5.2 (318)
Bore & Stroke: 3.91 x 3.31 in..(99.3 x 84.0 mm)
5.9 (360)
Bore & Stroke: 4.00 x 3.58 in. (101.6 x 90.9 mm.)
Also, the 99 rating for the 5.9 was 245hp...5.2 was 230hp
97 rating for the 5.9 was 235hp...5.2 was 220hp
Those are the only years I have numbers handy for. Changes could be due to intake restriction, compression, head flow, computer programming, etc.

SO a 97 with a 5.2 magnum and a Highflow intake and less restricted exhaust could be close to 230-240 range if the 97 was 220hp? Is that just the 5.2 or the 5.2 magnum? Of course thats a rough guess by taking the horse power increase clamed by individual parts and components and subtacting half of that makes about 235 on my 5.2.
AirAid claimes- "The higher your engine's air flow, the greater its efficiency and horsepower output will be. Our dyno-testing has resulted in gains as high as 18 horsepower, with no other changes or modifications!
Magnaflow claimes "Magnaflow increases power from 3 to 23 horsepower and from 6 to 28 lbs. of torque, depending on your vehicle"
total gain maybe....15hp? total possible by these products 31hp...Any truth to these numbers or do we need to do a dyno?

The 220hp is for the 5.2 Magnum. The LA-318 (5.2) wasn't put in the 2nd gen trucks....nor was the LA-360 (5.9).
As far as power gains from mods, every engine is different and what the manufacturer claims is usually the average. A good manufacturer will dyno their mods to get that average.
The only way to know for sure what impact they've had on your vehicle is to dyno it.

cool. Im happy with those numbers.I had some guy tell me my truck only had around 180! and he was a ram owner. I thought he was on crack. He had a 402 magnum in his truck and he said that only had 200. what the hell[sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]

He was probably refering to the rear wheel horse power. The numbers listed above (230 for 5.2 and 245 for 5.9) are crank horse power. If you take it to a dyno it will prolly only show about 180 horse at the rear wheels. I plan to dyno mine sometime cause my buddy says (don't know for sure) he can get me in for free, but I ain't done it yet. If I do, I'll post the numbers.

Drivetrain loss can be anywhere from 10 to 30% depending on the vehicle. There are a lot of factors that go into it, and the only way to know for sure what you have is to have it dyno'd.
Now this could lead into another discussion about what different brands of dynos are reputable and what brands aren't....but out of the hundreds of discussions I've read about that, nobody seems to have any solid evidence that one is better than the next. [>:] It all comes down to personal preference I guess....or which one gives you a higher HP rating [8D]
