Default 46RE transmission problem

Just bought an 01,2wd,5.2 with 57,000 miles. Problem is speed required for OD to kick in. From 3rd to OD seems like rpm's are higher than speed would indicate. The fluid level was down, about an inch on dipstick or good inch to get in the ok zone. Added a quart atf-4 after driving 90 miles at 70 mph I slowed down for a town and it would not shift back up into OD. Then drove 40 to 45 mph at 2200rpm's for 30 miles. Finally got it go into OD after making small adjustment to TV cable. With OD off it will shift ok from1-2 and 2-3at the right rpm's and mph, after 40-45 the rpm's climb way faster than speed and I wouldn't dare push it past 50mph and rpm's about 2500. Something is wrong. Bought this from a dealership that said truck had been serviced and all fluids topped off. I looked at the color of fluid but did drive it 600 miles on the low side. Any thoughts, thanks. Havn't had any CEL's, maybe i should go pull injector wire off to make sure the light illuminates or go plug a code reader.

when you start your truck the cel should light up then go out to let you know that it is working

the trans issue is covered all over on this forum look at the first and second pages you will see atleast 3 threads with the same issues

when buying a vehicle dont trust the seller even a dealership look at all fluids prior to buying it

try a normal fluid/filter change

Just found an old post about these transmissions not going into OD when it's -5 or colder, which it was when this happened. But still don't have any speed range over 50 mphin 3rd gear with OD off. Trans shop this week. Truck is like brand new, otherwise. And yeh I'm kicking myself for not switching OD off and running through shift points and highway speed during test drive. This truck has never seen below -0 temps. It's a Missouri truck.

Sounds like it's slipping. Recheck trans fluid. Gotta check it in neutral, else you get a false reading.

if you have only had it for a few days, go back to the dealership, and have a chat. Even if they will only do halfsies on the trans rebuild, you will be that much further ahead.

Engine temp needs to be over 108 degrees for O/D, aside from that, I don't think there are any other restrictions on it.

Your sig says rebuilt tranny. How do you know? When was it done, and how many miles ago? Is TC locking up (beccaus if it is not, it will NOT go into OD.

Problem I thought i was having is not with my signature truck. I just bought a 2001 ram 2wd auto with 5.2 with only 57,000 miles on it. Turns out the trans is working perfectly. Had very reputable shop drive with scanner hooked up. One problem was from the the transmission being to cold.If the sensor gets to -5 it drops out of OD. This being a Missouri truck and real temp being more than -10 caused me to lose OD about 80 miles from home. What i thought was the engine revving way to high in 3rd gear, even though the rpm gauge was only around 2200 at 50 mph, is a bad mechanical fan clutch. This has never happened with my other dodge rams and it's always nasty cold here in Jan/Feb. I could try asking dealer to pay for part of repair but I jumped on a jet, flew to Kansas City, MO. test drove and bought as is. It's really weird not having to keep putting oil in it. Will work it into sig when I get time.

Time for an e-fan upgrade! Cheaper than a tranny rebuild!
