Default 4wd help

hey guys i have a 2000 ram 1500 4wd 5.9 i was out taking the dog for a run here a hour or so ago and got to a spot where with the clay mud i got stuck temporarily and put it in 4 hi. moved a little bit but couldnt go anywhere in forward. so i put it in 4 lo and was able to get going again. i got past the rough spot and about 30 yards later it kicked out of 4 lo. so i put it in neutral and went back to 4 hi. just to be on the safe side. went anther 300 yards and it kicked out of 4 hi. what could be causing this? is there some sort of sensor that kicks it out if its not slick? its got me worried and confused. please help me figure this out asap so i can get it fixed... that is if i need to... thanks in advance

Never heard of that happening before. No, it should not just kick out of gear. Are you sure you had it all the way in gear? Also, make sure when in 4 low, don't go over 40km/h (not sure the speed in mph... 15?)

Check the adjustment on the t-case shift linkage, and make sure nothing is worn.

Gotta crawl under the truck. Start where the shift lever comes thru the floor, follow the linkage back to the t-case. make sure things are tight, and adjusted properly.

look the trans mount aswell you could be having exess movement of the trans and t case causing the shifter to hit where it goes through the cab floor and hitting it out of gear

Is the transfer case actually coming out of gear or is the front axle disengaging?
