Buying Tires, Gen3 Wheels on my Gen2.
Thanks. Tires were a concern, but honestly it made the decision easier and the timing of finding the wheels was perfect.
I inherited this 1998 Ram from my Wife's Grandfather last Spring. The front tires are some form of HD 8 ply tire that require a PSI of 80 and even if I leave them a little soft they are so hard that the bumps are all amplified. I am thinking they killed the new front shocks that went bad after a few weeks too. The rear tires are standard truck tires but have worn tread.
I was going to have to buy new tires for this old truck either way. I don't believe in buying used tires to save a few bucks...and even the tires I wanted for the stock 16" wheels were still around $200 each.
The tires I want for these 20" wheels are $205 each, with free shipping. I happened to find the deal on the new wheels and bingo, I knew I could hold off and buy the 20" wheel tires and upgrade two things at once.
I changed up to a better front shock this weekend, finished stripping off the pin stripes, and am gearing up for a swap to change from the 231 to the 242 transfer case and convert to the AWD style four wheel drive system.
The driver's fender is still banged up and I'm looking for a black replacement on Craigslist, and someone plowed my rear bumper so I have to replace that...after that this truck is DONE.
I too have the 20's off of an 09 and am running a 275/60/r20 tire on my 2001 sport 4x4 with no rubbing at all..
speedo is off a little bit but not too much ~5mph at 60..
Running 3.55 gears and didn't notice any power difference with them over the stock rim/tire combo..(Damn death flash makes it struggle anyways.)
Overall I like the 20's over the stock wheels!

What about a 275/65/20 ? Having a brain fart and I can't recall if that'll make the tire wider on the rim or taller on the rim?
Taller and a little skinnier wouldn't be horrible, I wish I could see them and check for clearance before buying them. There looks to be extra space on the trucks I have seen with these wheels and the 275/60/20...and I would like to fill in the wheel well a little more if they wouldn't rub.
