Default Dodge experts please

Hey everyone!
First i want to say thank you to everyone that posts useful info on DodgeForum.com! I have been reading the forum for years now and have just decided to join!

Well heres my Question:

I have a 97 Dodge ram 1500 5.9 4wd and i have done many mods (thanks to DodgeForum) All my mods are listed in my sig. I am getting about 12mpg on 93 octane gas.

I have searched the forum up and down and have found lots of answers to my question im going to ask but i would like to start a new thread to compile everything together.

I want to know the Best mods for Gas mileage.

What i have came up with is,

Ngk V power is a respected spark plug

Magnacor Sparkplug wires are great

Im not to sure on a Distributor cap or rotor button

As for ignition coil majority says to stick with the stock one

The 14x3 air cleaner is good but when i tried one my throttle linkage was in the way...

So everyone ive done my research but i would like to know everyones opinion on some things yall do for better MPG

Thanks in Advance!

Also my cylinder 8 burns a very minimal bit of oil but every once in a blue moon it will idle a little funny for a sec until i touch the gas pedal then it evens back out. So i think thats why i cant run a normal champion plug cause it misfires on cylinder 8 with them.

Fix the plenum gasket that will solve the #8 issue, do a comp or leak down test to see if you have cracked heads. Jet chip is snake oil same with the TB spacer. 12-16mpg is average for these trucks. Re-gearing my or my not help mpg, chances are you have 3.55 add that with 33's for tires and it will lug the motor, 3.92 or 4.10 gears are better with your tire size. Look at getting a SCT tuner that might also help mpg. Does the truck still have a cat under it?

If it was the plenum gasket wouldnt it misfire/ burn a little oil on more than just cylinder eight?

also what do you mean by the jet chip and tbs is snake oil? what would you recommend?
Thanks!

Yea it does have a cat but its gutted and the rest of the exhaust is straight piped. I forgot to metion that if i put octane booster like brand 104 octane boost it really pisses my truck off and throws the cel for cylinder 8 misfire

Oiled up #8 plug is a symptom of blown plenum gasket. Verify by pulling the throttle body and looking for pooled oil in intake (given that you have PCV valve from the dealer). Jet chip and tbs give no benefit to performance or mpg, an SCT from hemifevertuning or superchips 3815 is better alternative. There's also no benefit to running octane booster or premium gas, given that your truck is running correctly.

That depends on how bad the plenum gasket is blown.

Thanks!
I recommend you remove them both. The pcm will over ride/write the jet chip, TB spacer only works on TBI engines not MPI engines, so it does nothing at all. Look at the SCT tuner that will put a smile on your face.

As posted do a comp test see what 8 has for comp, odd's are it's way down.

if the plenum gasket was leaking bad enough it could cause a miss. essentially a leaking plenum gasket is the same as a vacuum leak. you can usually check by hooking a vacuum/pressure gauge to your valve cover where the pcv valve is. normally you should see a bit of pressure but if your plenum is leaking bad enough to cause a miss you may see vacuum which is bad.
