Dodge experts please
Your mech is right there will be a small amount of oil in the intake from the pcv system. In my op there is only one way to tell if the plenum gasket is shot, and that's to pull the intake off. So buy the new gasket and intake bolts and other stuff and just do the job. If nothing else you will have peace of mind that it is fixed. I still say do a comp test on #8 cyld.

Concerning gas mileage:
I have done the math on gas mileage increase and although the environmental benefits speak for themselves, the financial the bottom line is not what everyone wants to hear.
At todays price in Newark, Ohio, regular gas is $3.75.
If you have a 13mpg vehicle (good for these trucks) and actually get a 2mpg increase from your mods (52 miles per tank), it would take about 3000 miles to break-even on a $100.00 investment, 6000 miles for $200.00, etc.
Granted, we all want our trucks to run properly, and if you're like me, you enjoy working on them. But going for a 1-2 mpg increase in mileage is not really worth it unless you drive a lot of miles.
Bottom line:
I love my 2nd gen and don't really care about the mileage. That's why I own it. Yeah, she's a little rusty, but when I turn the key, it starts and takes me where I want to go. I don't have a payment, insurance is cheap, I can treat it like a truck, and at the end of the day, I can still look down on the roof of a Prius or Smart and think, "you would fit in my bed" and I would crush you in a one-on-one.

I am not a Taylor wire liker at all yuck, MSD 8.5 super conductor is what I and a few others here use, nice wire. Or look at http://www.magnecor.com/ as for the coil stock is fine.
Don't matter who makes the cap just make sure it has bass terminals, tip when I got my last cap from Mopar it did not have brass terminals where as they used to so just check it over before you pay for it.

Anytime bud and thanks for the complement. Well it's not flawless anymore, after this winter I have rust to deal with (insert lots of bad words here). Yep M1 intake is what's on there, if you are thinking of getting one Summit has them in stock, where as Dodge has none in stock so if you want one get one fast like asap fast. They are a great intake I have nothing bad to say about it one bit.

I understand that man i live in NC mountains and it snows like crazy here and they dump like 5 million pounds of salt on the roads every other day....rust is unavoidable where theres snow and salt. and stopping the rust is difficult..Good luck merc!
I was changin my distributor cap and rotor button today and everything was goin smooth until i got to the rotor button that was already on the truck....that thing is stuck on there...its like someone super glued it on the distributor haha but i just left the old one on and just changed the cap...i wonder if anyone else has had this issue?
