Default 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Transmission Issue

Hello Team,

I have a 1998 1500 5.2 4wd with 184,000 miles. It just started violently "bucking" when it shifted into third at about 44-45 mph. If I slowed down and kept in 2nd manually, did okay but couldn't go more than 43 mph. I got a check engine light momentarily and then it extinguished. Haven't had a chance to check for the code.

I had trouble with it slipping when it was cold a few weeks ago and added Lucas transmission fix to the fluid. Did great for a couple of weeks and then this issue happened. I suspect it's the governor solenoid and governor pressure sensor from what I have read on the forum.

Am planning on dropping pan and replacing solenoids, filter and fluid. Do you think this will fix the issue or is it time to have a rebuild?

Thanks for your input.

Sounds like your cat is clogged. Read the plenum sticky on top of the page.

As zman said, you've got a clogged cat.

Likely a misfire too.
Read the plenum sticky and do a transmission flush as you put the Lucas in it. I've learned that if you get a slip when it's cold, the fluid is a bit low.
