Default Play in the crank shaft

I talk with the mechanic replacing my rear main seal and he mentioned that my crank had a lot of motion in it. He was telling me this becuase it could lead to the rear main leaking again.

What I am wondering is if it could lead to bigger problems?

Also, hard hard is it to replace the crank, I read here that you pop of the harmonic balancer and then the crank? I am good with anything that bolts to the outside of theengine, never really had to work on engine internals.

Thanks

Default RE: Play in the crank shaft

If it has alot of end play your thrust bearing is wore and it will knock out your seal again.I never changed the mains in anything that new but I have in an older Ford.If you can get enough clearance you can do it with the motor in truck. Not fun though.
