Default P1740 code

So just bought a 2001 dodge ram and im getting this code and i need to get it through emmisions. the truck seems to run fantastic but from what i have read its eitehr to tcc solenoid or the overdrive solonoid. Im wanting to assume its the overdrive solenoid because when i change between o/d i dont notice any sort of change. any ideas on how to at least get it throw emmisions without putting a whole lot of money into it or diy on how to replace the solenoids? i have to say its my first truck and i have never changed solenoids so this is a little new to me. even with all that i do have to say i love my dodge. its way to much fun to drive.

So you're saying the CEL is on during the smog inspection and they won't pass you? Usually on a sale, the seller is responsible for performing the smog test and responsible for corrections (at least by CA law here) before Buyer gets it.

I don't know what that code is referring to and I'm not going to look it up.

What is the actual description of it then....? If it's either of those solenoid's then that will cost ya on the tranny.

Good idea to search the forums for related topics or google in general too.

i dont understand why its cause me to fail either. personally i think its ridiculous. The transmission seems to be fine. It just doesnt seem like my overdrive is working. Would the light stay off if everytime i turned the truck on i just turned the o/d off. I just need it to stay off long enough to get through emissions. last time it came on after 30 miles. Im thinking about replaceing the valve body i just dont really know how. its in the transmission pan right. Im hoping that would clear the code. if my idea as to trick it doesnt work.

Download the 01 service manual from the FAQ/DIY section. You need to replace the TCC/OD solenoid assembly. Replacing the valve body will not fix it. While the pan is off replace the gov. solenoid with a borg warner solenoid, and install a drain plug too.

Z - is the TCC/OD solenoid one of those 2 big ones accessible by simply dropping the pan? which one?

It's sorta behind the valve body. It is possible to replace without VB removal, I have done it and so have others, like redneckram for instance.

I've had to replace that before, the O Rings on the 8 pin Connector vanished....

It's not terribly hard, and you don't have to remove the valve body.
