Default 12v Mileage Computer?

Hi i have a question and am hoping some one knowledgeable in the area could help me out.

I have fairly recently purchased my Holy Grail, 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 Quad SLT 12v CDT 4x4 Auto. It has a console computer above the rear view mirror, it shows outside temp and compass direction, however when i push the "Comp/Temp" it shows nothing at all. Being that it is a 12v did they originally even have a mileage computer option? If they did any recommendations on where to start wiring diagnosis?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I believe the overhead console didn't get a mileage computer until 1999. 1994-1998 were Comp/Temp only.

ya that is what i thought, although i was thinking it was a 24v option, meaning a 98 with a 24v could have that option. My guess is either it is not the original console or they threw them in the 12v's since the 24v's where supposed to be in them all that year (conjecture).
