Default Broken Timing chain / need help

2001 Ram 2500 2WD 5.9 Magnum

Just saying in advance I am an able wrench turner but Im new to working these types of vehicles...

I was replacing the water-pump I realized coolant was also leaking from the timing cover area. I was starting the engine to let it pressurize the cooling system so I could be able to see where exactly the leak was coming from. I tried to start the engine and suddenly it sounded off time. I stupidly kept trying and trying to start the truck. I had it towed to the firestone bc i was working on it in a school parkinglot behind my apartment and it was sunday night.

Firestone said my timing chain broke.. I said "OK" and they qouted me $650 with the diagnostic being $100. I got a call a few hours later and the manager told me the timing chain MAY have caused unspecified "internal damage". I said "OK" and let them continue the job. I got another call saying I should have my plug wires replaced with new plugs when the timing chain gets done. I said "OK". So i get to the truck after about 7 hours that they had it. My bill was 1200 dollars and the truck can barely run better than a go cart. I know I was ripped off but I had no choice because I need my truck for work and I cant afford downtime.

Should I try to rebuild this engine and has anyone ever heard of similar situation because I searched this site and found nothing on this one..

thanks guys!

PS this forum is the ****!

The fuel sync wasn't set I bet.

You need to make sure everything is in time, and set the fuel sync in the PCM.

Hopefully someone else will chime into...

Do you think they fuxed it up by not having it set right

or

I did by trying to start it when the chain was broken?

thanks!!

Well, you messed it up by trying to start it with the busted chain, but you didn't know that.

And they have made it a problem still by not setting the fuel sync.

True. this was in august. Im just now being able to deal with it unfortunately.

I just dont want to blame them for it if it was my fault. They did call me and say that there MAY be some internal damage and I did give them the go ahead to fix the timing chain. Im not sure why they did plugs and wires on it when it doesnt even run. thats what chaps my *** the most...

If the work was done in August I'd bed they'd tell you to get lost if you tell them to fix it (for free)

Find a shop that knows how to do Fuel Sync and have them check it, go from there....

damn, i hate to read rip-off stories like this.

assume nothing and start at the beginning with a compression check. you can rent a tester at your local parts store chain. you have to "buy it", but you get a full refund when you return it.

also check that your plug wires are on correct. cylinder #1 is marked on the cap. i think its on the front, just left of center when your look at it. if you can't see it, feel on the side of the cap for the raised number. i'll find a pic of the firing order in a moment.

Did you see the broken parts? (I'm betting no..) These chains are not prone to breaking.

Since you state that it doesn't run any better than a go cart - Have you checked the plenum? I bet the cat is plugged.

I have a 99 2500 5.9 that has the plenum issue but I dont think my 01 does.

Before the chain broke the truck ran like it was brand new. It was a great engine. I never did see the broken chain.
