Broken Timing chain / need help
2001 Ram 2500 2WD 5.9 Magnum
Just saying in advance I am an able wrench turner but Im new to working these types of vehicles...
I was replacing the water-pump I realized coolant was also leaking from the timing cover area. I was starting the engine to let it pressurize the cooling system so I could be able to see where exactly the leak was coming from. I tried to start the engine and suddenly it sounded off time. I stupidly kept trying and trying to start the truck. I had it towed to the firestone bc i was working on it in a school parkinglot behind my apartment and it was sunday night.
Firestone said my timing chain broke.. I said "OK" and they qouted me $650 with the diagnostic being $100. I got a call a few hours later and the manager told me the timing chain MAY have caused unspecified "internal damage". I said "OK" and let them continue the job. I got another call saying I should have my plug wires replaced with new plugs when the timing chain gets done. I said "OK". So i get to the truck after about 7 hours that they had it. My bill was 1200 dollars and the truck can barely run better than a go cart. I know I was ripped off but I had no choice because I need my truck for work and I cant afford downtime.
Should I try to rebuild this engine and has anyone ever heard of similar situation because I searched this site and found nothing on this one..
thanks guys!
PS this forum is the ****!

True. this was in august. Im just now being able to deal with it unfortunately.
I just dont want to blame them for it if it was my fault. They did call me and say that there MAY be some internal damage and I did give them the go ahead to fix the timing chain. Im not sure why they did plugs and wires on it when it doesnt even run. thats what chaps my *** the most...

damn, i hate to read rip-off stories like this.
assume nothing and start at the beginning with a compression check. you can rent a tester at your local parts store chain. you have to "buy it", but you get a full refund when you return it.
also check that your plug wires are on correct. cylinder #1 is marked on the cap. i think its on the front, just left of center when your look at it. if you can't see it, feel on the side of the cap for the raised number. i'll find a pic of the firing order in a moment.
