So I've ordered all the parts to fix my plenum and do a tune-up and was thinking about replacing the lifters since I understand that it is pretty easy when doing the plenum. I'm not mechanically inclined enough to replace the plenum myself and I'm having a shop do it, and I was wondering just how much time (time=labor cost) it might be to have the lifters done as a PM thing. I read somewhere that it's 7+ hours, in which case, I can't afford it.

 

The 7 hours is probably not taking into account the intake is off. But you would still have to pull rockers. How many miles on truck? Any reason to suspect the lifters need replaced? I would not replace them unless I suspected they were bad or if I was replacing cam.

 

118,*** miles. I'm not having any problems with them right now. The previous owner didn't take the best care of the truck, as it obvious by some of the problems I've been having with it, so I was looking at other things that I could replace as a PM type thing since the intake would be off the truck. Someone suggested lifters. I've already had the timing chain, gasket, and cover replaced when it blew 4 months after I bought the truck.

 

Other than intake, I would look at plugs, cap and rotor if you haven't already done them. Maybe water pump if it has not been done. My Ram had 134,000 miles of abuse before I got it. Fortunately they appeared to have changed the oil regularly as I have good compression, no oil consumption, or engine knock. I think your lifters should still be good.

 

Just a quick note: If you replace lifter's you will most likely have to replace the cam. The Dodge FSM calls it a requirement...

 

Well then, I think that the stock lifters are just fine then lol. Not looking to go that far into the engine.........yet.

 

Hey! But good you for thinking about what other preventative work should be done. Too often, most will just replace what is known and do not look forward.

 

Yea, I'm doing the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and oxygen sensor with the plenum. I'm then switching my CAD to a Posi-Lock instead of the vacuum actuated system. Never again will I have to hitch a ride to work cause my big awesome truck's 4x4 doesn't work. I wasn't too happy lol. I'm hoping that after the new transmission that was installed a year ago and all this stuff, the truck will be a whole different beast. My poor SCT has been sitting around waiting for the plenum to get fixed.

Eh... Roller cams are hella more forgiving than flat tappet cams are... That said, I wouldn't replaced a lifter simply as a pm measure... They're good until they ain't..
