Default 1998 dodge ram 1500 5.9 4x4 automatic Transmission Problems

1998 Dodge RAm 1500 5.9 4x4 automatic
Transmission Problem: My transmission seems to be slipping, I would put my foot on the as and rpms will shoot up to 4000+ and i have to let off, then gas, then let off for it to upshift. Pulled over it was completely out of transmission fluid and smoke was coming out of the fluid tube. Checked the fluid the weekend before and the levels were fine, I then put transmission fluid in and it seemed to get better, but would still slip between 1st and second, If put in reverse truck jars back and forth( like its kicking in and out of gear) As soon as it gets into second gear truck runs like a charm. Also, there is no check engine or transmission light on.

Do you have any transmission leaks?

You might drop the pan and see what you find on the magnet, clean or replace the governor solenoid, maybe even a band adjustment, but if the transmission got hot you'll be headed for a rebuild soon.

There is a slight leak that collects a few drops under the pan but nothing major, I noticed that when i bought it a few months ago, I always check under the truck before i leave and there has been no puddles? Saturday the pan is getting dropped and filters, and solenoids will be replaced

Smoke is not good. Drop the pan and see what's in it.
