Default front axle u joint/hub change gone wrong?

ok, here it is guys. to make it short and sweet, I replaced u joints and got new hubs for my 99 4x4.. I went to slide axles back in and the passenger side went into the seal smoothly. I then "hit something so I figured it was time to start turning slightly to line teeth up, it slid in a tiny bit then nothing more.. couldn't go in no further.

so I pulled it out and shined my light back down in there and saw something was out of place. it seems to line up with where the shift motor is for my 4wd. i got a few good pics of it (will post of course)..

now just to make it clear, i took pics of inside the axle housing right after i pulled the axle out a few days ago, everything looked good and nothing out of place (pics of that as well)..

which brings me to this post. i have no problem searching the forum and google too, but i needed this truck done 2 days ago and now hit a snag so i really don't have hours to read old threads and hope i find something quick (never happens)... so sorry, but i need to know how to correct this.

i don't know if a metal coat hanger would push it over so i can line things up, don't know if i have to rip that diff apart now.... ugh.

thanks in advance and again, sorry. im sure some can understand.

Right after i pulled axle out

And now, not sure of the name of it, but its out of place.

i have a few more but i think those are the best of 'em.

It looks like the shift collar when looking in the FSM of the 2001, per Fig 28 (pdf page 106).

You should be able to adjust it by accessing via the CAD plate. Just make sure to reseal with RTV or similar method of gasket sealer.

Someone that has had their own hands on this will hopefully chime in to correct me or affirm or other.... lol

I agree...looks like the collar has slipped. Nice pics of the inside of the axle housing by the way.

Just use a broom handle or the like to move it back into place.

thanks. i took a million to make sure i had a few great ones. that's about the best.

But, you should see the other side since the previous owner did nothing to "keep up" on things. the "dust boot" or whatever it is that seals the axle shaft to the axle housing was dry rotted and torn up and apart. tons of rust at the opening so i cleaned it the best i could and shop-vac'd the crap out.
and i couldn't find a replacement "boot/seal" anywhere. i'll figure something out on that.

oh, here is a pic of the driver side housing since im still logged into PB.

look at that crap.

So long as the collar goes back into the fork nicely, you should be golden. If it wants to be uncooperative, just pull the cad housing off the back side of the axle there, and it'll be easy. Careful on the bolts for the housing though, they like to break.
