Default DIY Reg Cab Sunroof?

Hey guys. I recently purchased a 1996 reg cab ram for $300 just for parts and to my surprise it has a sunroof. And even more surprising is the fact that it isnt leaking. its just a pop up one. Now I have heard this was an extremely rare option from factory but I've also heard it was a dealer install, not factory. Anyways, my truck is a 98 reg cab (see sig) and I'm intrigued by the idea of putting the sunroof in my truck. Theres just something about looking up and seeing the sky that I love. Has anybody done this before in a reg cab? Any suggestions? Thanks.

They're out there. I don't believe they were ever offered that way though. I believe it was just a dealer install. Same with my Mustang. I would have to vote against it. Aftermarket sunroofs are notorious for leaking. If it isn't right now it probably will soon. Specially if you take it out to move to a different vehicle. You may or may not be able to seal it up to where it doesn't leak. Then again you may get it all moved over and have no problems at all. Unless you have the know how I would suggest talking to a couple of body shops to see if they would do it for you. We don't mess with them in our shop because of how big of a pain in the *** they can be. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I would stay away from it. It looks like whoever did merc's install, did an outstanding job, but generally, they do not come out that good. As previously said, they leak and often have excessive wind noise/howling. I have in the past, decided against buying otherwise very nice vehicles, just because they had aftermarked sunroofs.

Mine has never leaked or nor does it make any wind noise when closed. I get all my replacement parts for it from Dodge, never needed any parts but thats where they come from if needed. Like anything it needs to be maintained on a reg bases, lube the rubber seals, lube the plastic tracks and rollers check the seal spring and fall, make sure the drain tubes are not clogged with junk.

My truck was a ordered truck, it was not on the dealers lot, I watched it drive off the semi onto the dealers lot back in 96 with most of the opts I ordered. I know what was dealer installed and the sunroof was not one of them.
