Default 1994 Ram 1500 - Rear end locked up

My daughter was driving the truck and when she went to take off from a stop light the rear wheels were locked up - wouldn't turn. Drive-shaft came loose at the rear. We had to drag it out of the intersection and then drag it unto a flat-bed and then drag it into the driveway.

I am not a mechanic but am not afraid of wrenching either. What should I be looking at/for to find the cause? Rear Diff? Gears? Busted axle joint somewhere? This has sat for quite awhile but now that the weather is getting nice I need to get working on it.

There had been no indication of on-coming problems (at least not that I have been told of).

Please help get me looking in the right direction. Even telling me to RTFM is fine, but tell what FM to R.

thanks,
--scott

Probably wouldn't hurt to pull the diff cover and inspect the gears.

I know this may sound stupid, but did the u joint break? Or did the flange come off the rear end housing?
