Default PCM question

ok. I found out I have the death flash. Can I use the PCM from a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 for a cheap replacement until I can afford a tune?

Nope.

Has to be flashed with the VIN and there were a bunch of sensor changes between 97 and 01.

The PCM is not required to have the VIN of the vehicle in it to run. The key is to match the part number on the PCM in your truck to the used PCM you plan to install on your truck. I purchased a used PCM off of eBay that matched my original PCM's part number, installed it onto my truck and everything worked just fine.. At some point, I plan to have the dealer flash my new-to-me PCM with the VIN, along with the factory tune (less the death flash).
